Tips: Brushing Teeth with Children
Many parents would agree that brushing teeth with kids can be a challenge. If you’re tired of the daily fights with your little ones to brush and floss their teeth, then this blog is for you! Orthodontics and Dentistry for Kids wants to help you keep our child’s mouth healthy in and out of the office. Read on for a list of tips on how to get your child to enjoy brushing their teeth.
Make Brushing and Flossing Special
One of the best ways to get your child to enjoy brushing is to not let it become a chore, make it something they look forward to! Let them pick out their own, fun tooth brushes and flavored toothpaste at the store; this will get them excited to use them later that night when it’s time to brush. Make oral care something they look forward to rather than dread.
Create Fun Games to Play while Brushing
Making tooth brushing into a game is a great way to encourage kids to enjoy brushing. Some ideas include giving your child a toothbrush to play with while they have their teeth brushed, letting them brush a toy’s teeth while getting their’s done or even letting them “help” mommy and daddy brush theirs, leading by example. Clapping and cheering on your child as they brush their teeth lets them feel accomplished with their work, even they only get a few teeth done on their own.
Another option can be finding a fun tooth brushing app! Nowadays there’s an app for anything, even dental care. Finding an app with a fun song or demonstration can be a fun way to encourage kids to brush.
Try Offering Rewards for Good Dental Habits
If your child hasn’t responded well to encouragement, learning about dental health or attempts at making brushing more fun another option can be adding small rewards for good brushing habits. If you offer an allowance for weekly chores, consider adding brushing and flossing to the list. Or, give your child a cheap toy, book or sticker for brushing and flossing with no complaints. Many parents think this is like bribing, but if all else fails this could be a good, even temporary, option to build good habits.
More Tips and Tricks
Some fun, creativity and a little encouragement goes a long way in building good dental care habits for your children. A light up tooth brush, bubble gum tooth paste or a fun app can be all it takes to put your child on a life long track of great oral health. Have you tred any of these tricks?
